Aging has a dark underside that sometimes means that our physical and mental vitality leaves us and we wilt in our twilight years. But this does not need to be. On the bright side, we know that we can preserve our bodies and our minds, and enhance our vitality. In order to keep your body from aging it is very important that you get the right amount of sleep. For most people, the way they look is largely dependent on how much sleep they get. Having eight hours of sleep every night is ideal but it varies from person to person.
As we age, our body decreases in hormone production, such as testosterone and estrogen. You doctor may prescribe hormone replacement therapy drugs. These drugs can cause harmful side effects, so they should be taken under physician’s supervision only.
Eat with your friends and your family. You can make a day of it with your family, and it does not have to be a holiday to do it. Prepare the meal together. Make it a meal of everyone’s favorite foods, and teach them the way that you have prepared these kinds of food throughout their lives.
No matter where you live, give your living space a personal touch to make it feel like your own. As we age, we often find that our tastes change, so make sure you keep your home consistent with your tastes. If you have moved to a new house or a retirement home, bring sentimental or interesting things with you to keep your surroundings lively.
Keep up with the latest styles. Although some of today’s fashion is a bit off the wall, you are sure to find a piece or two that you will feel comfortable wearing. Just by adding a trendy top to your outfit, you are sure to feel and look good and the younger generations will notice.
Stay away from extreme environmental conditions. The cold air and the sun can both equally damage your skin. This can lead to not only premature aging but much more damaging problems like skin cancer.
Make sure you’re getting enough vitamin D in your diet. If you’re not, try eating more fish or drinking more milk. If you can’t do either of those, look into supplements. Vitamin D has been shown to slow the aging process and can keep you looking and feeling young much longer. Plus, it has other health benefits as well!
Learn something new. There’s an old saying that says, “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks”; it’s a myth. Get out there and take a class or develop a hobby. Not only will it occupy your time. Your brain will get a workout from the new information you’re learning.
Growing old is old fashioned. Our increased health spans mean that we are younger than we think. Aging with grace is an art and takes effort to see the beauty in it at times. So, go out and live life to the fullest because you are not as old as you think.
